1893

  • The Great Swami Vivekananda visited Singapore on 12th June 1893 for 3 days
  • Swamiji visited Botanic Garden and Singapore Museum
1913 & 1919

  • At the request of the devotees and enthusiasts, Swami Sharvananda, the then president of Ramakrishna Math, Madras and later vice-president of our order visited Singapore in 1913 and 1919. He was a great orator. He delivered several lectures for the devotees
  • In 1919 Arya Sangham donated a plot of 5,547 sq ft. land at Norris Road valued at $12,000 to set up a branch of Ramakrishna Mission.
1921

  • Swami Abhedananda, a disciple of Sri Ramakrishna along with Swami Prakashananda, and Swami Paramananda, the monastic disciples of Swami Vivekananda, visited Singapore in 1921 and addressed the devotees.
1928

  • Belur Math assigned Swami Adyananda in May 1928 to Singapore
  • On 7th August 1928, the Ramakrishna Mission was inaugurated in Singapore.
1933

  • Swami Paramananda visited and gave an inspiring address at the Town Hall (later Victoria Theater)

  • 24th to 27th February 1935 the Mission celebrated the Birth Centenary of Sri Ramakrishna. The highlight of the programme was a conspectus of religions held at the Victoria Memorial Hall where nearly 1000 people attended.
  • In April 1935, Swami Ashokananda visited the Mission on his way back to America from India.
  • On 1st October 1935, Swami Prabhavananda, the Founder-President of the Hollywood Mission Center he delivered a lecture on “Universal Religion” at the Victoria Memorial Hall before a large audience.
1936 & 1937 - Our Education works starts

  • On 1st January 1936, the Vivekananda School was registered as the Vivekananda Tamil School and the Vivekananda Afternoon English School.
  • On 2nd February 1937, the Saradamani Girls’ School (separating the girls and boys from the Vivekananda school) at 38 Norris Road was opened. Within 6 months the school was filled to capacity.
1939 - Ramakrishna Orchestra was formed

  • 9th September 1939, the Ramakrishna Mission Young Men’s Cultural Union was formed
  • Sunday classes were conducted for children and adults.
1940 - Beginnings of the Boys’ Home

  • The Mission saw the beginnings of the Boys’ Home as five boys came into its care. The Mission aimed to give the boys academic, moral and vocational education.
1941 - Purchase of Bartley Road land

  • A spacious land of 5 ¾ acres was bought at Bartley Road in 1941 at $12,471.15. Originally it was intended to be a residential school for boys. This was shelved in favour of the boys’ orphanage because of the war.
1943

  • On 14 April 1943, Mr. Mamoru Shinozaki of the Japanese Military Administration officiated at the opening of the Boys’ Home which was the only place for orphan boys at that time. Boys from as far away as Kedah and other places in Malaya were sent to the Mission.
  • Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose generously donated and semi-permanent dormitories were built for the boys. The strength mostly orphans was 99.
1946

  • From 1st February 1946, Swami Vamadevananda took charge of the Singapore Centre.
  • On 20 March 1946, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and daughter Indira Gandhi visited the Mission and the Orphanages. (not Boys’ Home)
1947

  • On 6th Sept 1947, the foundation stone of the Ramakrishna Mission Orphanage Workshop at 179 Bartley Road was laid by Mr. John A. Thivy, Representative of the Government of India in Malaya.
1948

  • On 10 Dec 1948, the foundation stone of the orphanage dormitory for 100 orphans was laid by H.E. the Commissioner-General for the UK in South-East Asia, the Right Honorable, Mr. Malcolm MacDonald, P.C.
1949

  • Governor in Council approved Ramakrishna Mission as an Institution of Public Character under Section 33 (2)(c) of the Income Tax Ordinance
  • 1 March 1949, the birthday of Sri Ramakrishna, the foundation stone of the Sri Ramakrishna shrine was laid at Bartley Road by Swami Vamadevanada.
  • Mr. P. Govindasamy undertook to pay the entire cost of construction of the shrine at an estimate cost of $30,000
1952

  • 31 October 1952 the Sri Ramakrishna Temple was officially opened by Mr. P. Govindasamy in the presence of Swami Madhavanandaji, the General Secretary of Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission. The ceremony was performed by Swamis: Yatiswarnanda Omkarananda and Bhaswarananda under the guidance of Swami Madhavanandaji.
1954

  • Mdm Vijayalakshmi Pandit, President of the UN General Assembly visited the Ramakrishna Mission, Bartley Road. Singapore
  • For the first time in the history of Singapore branch a lady member Mrs. K.K.Ramchandani was elected to the Advisory Committee of the Mission.
1958

  • October 1958, Swami Ranganathanadaji, then Head of the Centre in New Delhi visited Singapore on his way back from Japan. He gave illuminating talks at the Victoria Memorial Hall, Raffles Institution, Beatty Secondary School, Seletar and at the Mission premises in Bartley Road and Norris Road.
1959

  • 6 June 1959, Swami Madhavanandaji declared open the Boys’ Home. He also delivered three lectures at the Mission premises and at the Victoria Memorial Hall.
1963

  • 4th March 1963, the Hon. Minister Mr. S. Rajaratnam, Minister of Culture presided the Birthday celebrations of Sri Ramakrishna and Swami Vivekananda.
  • 28th July 1963 Mr. Lee Kuan Yew, Prime Minister of Singapore, accompanied by Mr. S. Rajaratnam, Minister for Culture, Mr. Chan Chee, Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs, Mr. G. Kandasamy and Mr. S.V. Lingam members of the Assembly visited the Centre at Norris Road
1964

  • 24th February 1964 Swami Madhavanandaji laid the foundation stone of the Swami Vivekananda Centenary Memorial Building at Bartley Road.
1965

  • 18th April 1965 Prime Minister of Singapore Mr. Lee Kuan Yew visited the Mission on the occasion of the Birthday celebrations of Sri Ramakrishna and Swami Vivekananda.
1966

  • Dr.Zakir Hussain the 3rd President of india Visited Singapore in 1966. He visited Ramakrishna Mission Singapore on 16th October 1966
  • Swami Chinmayananda the founder and head of Chinmaya Mission, visited our Ashrama and delivered a lecture.
1969

  • 9th – 16th December 1969 Swami Ranganathanandaji Maharaj, visited Singapore. He gave about nine lectures in the University of Singapore, Indian Cultural Society etc places
  • 21 July 1969, Swami Vivekananda Centenary Memorial Building was declared open by the then Minister of Foreign Affairs and Labour, Mr. S. Rajaratnam and swami Gambhiranandaji, the General Secretary of Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission.
  • A house at 43 Que Moi Road was purchased by us for using it as a guest house. We paid $40,000/- to buy that house. Now we call it Sarada Devi House and is partially rented out to Boys’ Home as an alternative in case of any emergency for the boys and the staff.
1975

  • 7th July 1975 the delegates of the Exploratory Meeting for South Asia Inter-Religious Consultation for Peace and members of the Inter-Religious Organization met at the Mission at Bartley Road.
  • 25 November 1975 the inaugural session of the Asian Conference on Religion and Peace was held at the Singapore Conference Hall. Swami Siddhatmanandaji, Chairman for the event delivered the Welcome Note.
  • 27 November all the delegates for the Conference met at the Bartley Road Centre.
1977

  • 8 May 1977 Swami Swahanandaji, Head of the Vedanta Society, Berkeley, California delivered a lecture at Bartley Road.
1978

  • 6th – 14th April 15th – 24th May 1978 Swami Bhuteshanandaji, Vice-President of the Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission, Belur Math visited Singapore Mission. Swamiji delivered a total of six lectures and gave spiritual guidance to several devotees.
  • 7th August Mission celebrated the Golden Jubilee of the Singapore Centre with prayers, devotional songs and speeches at the Temple Hall at Bartley Road.
  • 22nd Dec 1978 a ‘Parliament of Religions’ was held in conjunction with the Golden Jubilee Celebrations. The function was inaugurated by Dr. Ahmad Mattar, then Minister of Social Affairs. The Parliament of Religions was held at the Singapore Conference Hall. The theme of the Parliament was “Harmony of Religions and Inter Religious Fellowship”.
  • 28 Jan Swami Sridharanadaji, Head of the Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Polyclinic, Lucknow visited the Centre. He delivered several lectures in Singapore and Malaysia
1980

  • Swami Siddhatmanandaji passed away after serving for 21 year (1959 – 1980 ) the Singapore Center. Much development work was done during his period.
1983 - Transition

  • August 1981 the Mission shifted its administration office from No.9 Norris Road to 179 Bartley Road.
  • No. 9 and No. 38 Norris Road need much repair and activities were minimal. The Advisory Committee and Mission Headquarters approve the sale of these two premises. The sale was completed this year. We ran our activities for more than 50 years from there.
1986

  • Joint celebrations of the 150th Birth Anniversary of Sri Ramakrishna and the Centenary of Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Order was held over three months from 6 December 1986 to 1 March 1987.
1992

  • 22nd – 31st August 1992 Swami Gahananandaji Maharaj, Vice-President, Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission visited Singapore.
  • On 23rd August 1992 Maharaj officially declared open the Sarada Hall and the “Children’s Corner” of the library.
  • Based on the request from SINDA, Swami Jayadevanandaji conducted a feasibility study of starting a kindergarten with English as the medium of instructions and Tamil taught as the second language. SINDA gave the Mission $100,000 grant to start the Kindergarten.
  • 27 December 1992 the Sarada Kindergarten was formally opened by Mr. J Y Pillai, President of SINDA
1993

  • 6 June 1993 a free Homeopathy Centre was officially opened by Swami Atmasthanandaji, General Secretary of the Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission.
1994

  • April 1994 the Mission brought out its first issue of the quarterly publication “Nirvana”.
1995

  • 16 June 1995 the Counselling Service funded by the NCSS 25th Anniversary Endowment fund was started. Dr. (Mrs) Puspa Bose guided and assisted the counsellors.
  • July – Sept – The renovation of the Temple was carried out. The reconsecration ceremony was held on 25 September 1995 . Swami Gahanandaji Maharaj, Vice-President, Ramakrishna Mission and Ramakrishna Math performed the reconsecration ceremony.
  • 27 September 1995 the ground-breaking ceremony of the Sarada Kindergarten building was officiated by Srimat Swami Gahanandaji Maharaj, Vice President of Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission.
